Stockholm archipelago

It's bout time to explore!

Home away from home. The stunning archipelago of Stockholm stretches 80 kilometres east from the city into the Baltic Sea and consists of over 30 000 islands. 30 014 to be precise - many of them easily accessible by public ferry.

Recently named one of the world’s top destinations by National Geographic, and for great reason. It’s now more accessible by the local service providers we collaborate with. The archipelago offers opportunities for swimming, outdoor activities, and enjoying traditional Swedish cuisine in the fresh sea air to name a few.

Our number one outdoor activity is to explore the Stockholm Archipelago Trail, a unique 270 km hiking trail over 20 islands in the Stockholm Archipelago. From Arholma in the north to Landsort in the south. Every section of the trail is unique and can be reached by the local taxi boat operators. A hiking trail that will reach into your soul.

Islands to visit:

Utö

Utö is an island with a unique history. The island was settled as early as the mid-6th century. Unlike other islands in the archipelago, it was neither fishing nor agriculture that eventually became Utö’s main industry. Here, it was iron ore that provided the main source of income.

As early as the 12th century, iron ore began to be extracted from the mines, which went on to become some of the most important mines in Sweden. Intensive mining continued for around 700 years. The vast, abyssal mine shafts bear witness to those bygone days; they are now filled with water but can still be seen. Mining meant that new labour was constantly needed on the island. Perhaps this helped to shape the open and welcoming atmosphere that prevails on Utö today.

A popular year-round island in the outer southern archipelago known for its beaches. The island also boasts the well-known Utö Wärdshus with a hotel, hostel, and restaurant, and nearby is good swimming from the rocks in Rävstavik Bay. Try renting a bike and going to Ålö Island just south of Utö. Enjoy the white sandy beach and eat delicious Swedish seafood and fish at Båtshaket.

Landsort (Öja)

Stockholm archipelago's southernmost point. Landsort is the name of the lighthouse and small village on the island of Öja. It is a long, narrow island, about 5 km long and 500 meters wide, with nice walking paths all the way from north to south. The island’s hostel is open year-round, and it is just as exciting to visit Landsort in the fall or winter as it is during the summer. You'll get a sample of the many facets of life in the archipelago; beautiful nature, fascinating history, and a calm and soothing atmosphere.
